Short answer
International domains such as .com, .net and .org take 5 to 7 days, because the old registrar has that long to release them. South African domains such as .co.za follow ZACR's process, which is often quicker; our team will tell you what to expect for your domain.
| Domain | Typical transfer time | Adds a year? |
|---|---|---|
| .com, .net, .org, .info | 5 to 7 days | Yes |
| .co.za and other South African domains | Set by ZACR, often quicker | Yes on paid transfers; not where the transfer is free |
| Other international extensions | Usually 5 to 7 days | Usually yes |
Why international transfers take longer
For .com and similar domains, the current registrar gets up to five days to approve or reject the transfer. Many approve it sooner, and some let you approve it yourself from an email to speed things up.
Does my website go offline?
No. A transfer only changes who you pay for the domain. Your nameservers stay the same, so your website and email keep working during and after the transfer.
What can delay it
- The domain is still locked at the old registrar.
- The EPP code was mistyped. Copy and paste it instead.
- The domain was registered or transferred in the last 60 days (international domains).
- The owner’s email address on the domain is out of date, so the approval email never arrives.
